Amsterdam in 1538. Deze plattegrond, gemaakt door Cornelis Anthoniszoon, is de oudste stadsplattegrond van Amsterdam. Hierop is het voltooide middeleeuwse Amsterdam (met stadsmuur en poorten) te zien. Zoals vroeger gebruikelijk was, wordt de stad getekend vanaf het IJ, dus met het noorden aan de onderzijde.







In het begin van de achttiende eeuw verkrijgt de grachtengordel min of meer zijn definitieve vorm. In deze kaart van Covens en Mortier uit circa 1721 is de Hoogte Kadijk inmiddels herkaveld.

But here comes the big one: the 19th century.

The location (surrounded by water) makes me think it's "typhoon food", am I right ? It is a gorgeous city. Manila used to have a lot of canals too btw.

Your wallet would hate you for your indulgence. I think it's around 50 euro's for a short trip by canal boat these days..

I think that the canals that Amsterdam still has are just 70 percent of what it used to have.

Yes we got periodically victimized by floods that's why we constructed several inclined floodways.

The first one is already finished. 2 more to go. ^_^

However, Iloilo is only beautiful from the air when you can see the adjacent island. And unless you go to select districts...
The place is a mess.

What's actually ironic is that you guys burned down my place, twice during the Dutch-Spanish wars.

There used to be a fortress and castle here; in the first version...
Then kaboom! Dutch invasion of Iloilo! Fortress and castle destroyed (Fort San Pedro gone).

What you see now is different from what we had before. ^_^

Furthermore, the Dutch had a tidy profit from the Visayan slave-market at Batavia when the Moros picked off our Christian population and sold them as slaves there. That's why my Mexican ancestors from Veracruz were stationed (In now ruined) Fort San Pedro to guard against Dutch trepidation.
