Yes of course, if it was necessary for survival. Shops throw out all sorts of food because it has gone past the best before date even though it would still be perfectly edible. I wouldn't be looking for half eaten apples or the like.

If it's just a hobby or a chosen lifestyle, then it's kind of odd. But if it was really necessary it's different.
