Hah, I love how he's portrayed as "racist" against midgets. It reminds me of an anecdote: A number of years ago this older black guy at work jokingly said to me "it's a man's world, am I right?" A younger, more uppity, black woman overheard this and accused him of being a ray-ciss.

I doubt Tolkien imagined the Noldor to be swarthy. They were dark haired but noble looking therefore they would probably fit into the northern European Atlantid category.
