An Italian expression known by many translators: Traduttore, traditore. Translators are traitors.

Traduire est un emprunt italien qui n'apparaît en français qu'à la fin du 15e siècle (début de la Renaissance, tout ce qui était latin était alors à la mode).

    You misunderstood.
The verb translater was in Mediaeval French the normal word, the correct word, and the one and only word for [Modern French] traduire.
Traduire is a borrowing from Italian that didn't show up in French before the late 15th century (the Renaissance was starting, anything Latin was trendy back then).

Interesting. You made me check if that happened in Catalan too. And it does.

The first time traduir is attested in Catalan is in 1510:
Me pregà que yo volgués pendre treball de traduhir de latí en valenciana lengua de aquest gloriós sant la història.

    Before, we used traslladar:
-Per salari de reebre los comptes murischs et trasladar aquells en christianesch (1315)
-Vull seguir la manera d'aquells cathalans que trasladaren los llibres de Tristany e de Lançalot e tornaren-los de lengua francesa en lengua cathalana (~1450)
