Democracy and socialism are not opposites. In the United States there is an extreme form of capitalism, whereas for example Scandinavian countries or Germany and France are more typical welfare states. Citizens get various benefits like health-care, social insurance and unemployment benefits.

Germans today are a lot less oppressed than in other times of it's history, Germany nowadays is also not really comparable to the Weimar republic. Germans today are a lot more democratic than Germans in the Weimar Republic, and Germany also doesn't have to pay horrendous reparations.
