When I was 18, the "Joe College" look included smoking a pipe (as well as wearing tweed jackets with leather patches on the elbows). So, I smoked a pipe. When I was in the Navy, decent pipe tobacco being unobtainable except in certain ports, such as Gibraltar, I took up cigars, which I enjoyed greatly. Fine Cuban cigars, such as Upmann Corona Majors were not only easily obtained but inexpensive. Upmanns were 50 cents !
I didn't take up cigarettes until 14 years later. I had never inhaled before then. I never really liked them (they're made of really wretched tobacco) but they were convenient. On June 7, 1976, I quit "cold turkey." I hated giving up cigars, but decided that, if I still smoked them, I'd probably go back to cigarettes. So, I quit all smoking, pipes, cigars, and cigarettes.
