    Default Haplogroup V3?

    Hi!

I've got haplogroup V3 through my maternal line.

I am from The Netherlands, and i have no knowledge about haplogroups or mtDNA in general.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

    According to wikipedia:

Haplogroup V is a relatively rare mtDNA haplogroup found in approximately 4% of native Europeans.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_V_(mtDNA)

Its highest concentration is among the Saami people of northern Scandinavia (approximately 59%), where its divergence time is estimated at 7600 YBP (years before present). It has been found at approximately 10% among the Maris of the Volga-Ural region, leading to the suggestion that this region might be the source of the V among the Saami.[5]

Haplogroup V is also found at higher than average levels in Cantabrian people (15%)[6] of northern Iberia, and somewhat lower in nearby Basque people (10.4%).[7] It also is found in particularly high concentrations (16.3%) among the Berbers of Matmata, Tunisia.[8]

At least you mt-dna is more defined, i am simply V , this haplogroup surely come from paleolithic populations in europe, the population where appear have some interesting thing are related with ancient populations, basques and saami it is said are the oldest european, in Cantabria was the oldest place habited by hominids in Europe, the case of berbers i suppose it comes from Europe althought in ancient time the north Africa was populated with Paleolithic survivors, too it seems in Doggerland V was common

Theory 1) V formed in the Iberian glacial refuge.
Theory 2) It came to Europe from the near east with farming.

I'm not actually sure why theory 2 is even considered anymore.

Interesting results thanks for sharing. mtDNA haplogroup V along with U5b are the dominant mtDNA haplogroups among the Sami.

    That's quite interesting!

So what would these results imply ethnically?

All I can say is that both haplogroups V and U5b have been in Europe since pre-historic times.

Likely both from roughly the same area (Iberian glacial refuge).

It does seem likely that Iberia harbored a lot of mtDNA haplogroup U5b during the LGM based on what we have already from ancient DNA. Haplogroup V however is a bit more mysterious. It has not been found much in any ancient DNA results yet. It has been found among one Neolithic Pitted Ware hunter-gatherer sample from Sweden and one Neolithic farmer from Rossen in Germany.

Well the Saami cluster is supposed to coalesce at 7600 years old. A bit to early for farming to be reaching the northernmost fringes of Europe.
