Default Mountains and highlands of Sardinia

    Limbara

Mount Limbara (Gallurese: Monti di Limbara, Sardinian: Monte ‘e Limbara) is a rocky granitic massif in north-eastern Sardinia, Italy.
It is located in the geographical and historical region of Gallura.

Its highest peak is Punta Sa Berritta (1,362 m above sea level). Its area belongs to the comuni of Calangianus, Tempio Pausania, Berchidda and Oschiri, in the province of Olbia-Tempio.

The name could derive from the Latin Limes Balares ("Boundary of the Balares"), given it by the Romans as it marked the frontier with the territory still in the hands of the Balares, a late Nuragic tribe.

Mount Limbara was put to fire in 1936 and its woods made of cork oaks were replaced with pines, after a work of reforestation. After the World War II were planted forests of giant sequoias, too.

On the top of the massif was located a NATO Communications Relay Station and a Carabinieri's barrack. Today it is used as a telecommunications center for the Italian Air Force and a heliport for the Servizio Antincendi. It is also the location of all the major TV relay stations of West Sardinia. Today is a natural reserve and a regional park.

    Default Corrasi

Monte Corrasi is the highest peak in the Supramonte (Highland) of Oliena with its 1463 m above sea level.

It is characterised by a bare and rocky environment with peculiar geo-morphological elements such as its karstic plains, rutted fields, caves, abysses, steeples and pinnacles of the strangest forms. More than 650 botanical species have been catalogued in the area of Monte Corrasi. Among these, the majority are exclusive to the limestone rocks of central Sardinia and others are present only on Monte Corrasi. For the particularity and wealth of species that grow on this mountain, the Italian Botanical Council has included, since 1971, Monte Corrasi in its census of the biotopes of remarkable vegetation interest and deserving of conservation.
Upstream in the valley of Lanaittu, the cave of Corbeddu is found that takes its name from the bandit that sheltered there during the last century and it is famed for having brought the remains of a deer to light, lived in Pleistocene. First human settlements found in this massif are dated 18,500 years ago.

    Default Pulchiana

Monte Pulchiana is the largest granite monolith in Sardinia, situated on a highland in northern Gallura, at 550-673 m above sea level. It is an inselberg that originated from the breakdown of the rock via a process of hydrolysis. It has a characteristic round form, "panettone" (traditional Italian Christmas cake) and is partly covered in low, ground hugging brush; the rocky surface has a pinkish-yellow colour due to the process of oxidation.
Monte Pulchiana is included among the natural monuments of Sardinia.
The plant cover is characterised by brush and woods of cork oaks.

Another characteristic of Monte Pulchiana is the upland plain of Lu Pari, covered to a large extent by rockrose. Part of the land is for pasture and during the rainy months is also becomes marshy. Near this plain it is possible to see an open excavated road that was used to transport large blocs of granite extracted from a now disused quarry.
