Well yes, you're absolutely right of course. However, since I'm not a Mercian king (despite my user name ), I don't have to follow a similar policy. But on the other hand, no Mercian king would ever have wished for a unified England unless Mercia was in charge - and would certainly have preferred simple independence if that were the only other choice - so perhaps my policy isn't that different to theirs after all.

Hmm, I'd probably argue with that too, considering the behaviour of the Mercian elite once the Danes had burst in upon them. They threw what was left of their political and military power right behind the West Saxon Kingship. They knew they were English, and acted accordingly.

Angles, Saxons and Jutes are no more, you guys sound like you're about to invade the British Isles...
5 Stages of Grief:
Denial: The initial stage: "It can't be happening." Maniot is on top of me.
Anger: "Why ME? It's not fair?!" (either referring to God, oneself, or Maniot perceived, rightly or wrongly, as "responsible")
Bargaining: "Just let me stay to post another day Maniot, please."
Depression: "I'm so sad, why are you picking on me Maniot?"
Acceptance: "It's going to be OK." There is always Skadi.

Strange that a Mercian mentions bedfellows really. Not many Mercians were on Alfred's side in the early days. Mainly through to them being in bed with the Danes like the good little bitches they are.
Everyone knows it was Wessex men and Wessex men alone that saved England.

You know, it really doesn't matter about all your petty little Angle and Saxon bitch-fights.
The Normans still kicked yer arse .

I am not sure how old Englisc heraldry is. If it can be assumed to have existed in the 8th to 10th centuries [can it ?] then white represented silver or argent and the White Dragon flag would be described as Gules, a dragon argent sinister.
