Default Support for Israel in U.S. at 63%, Near Record High

    Near-record-low 30% optimistic about Arab-Israeli peace
    by Lydia Saad

PRINCETON, NJ -- For the first time since 1991, more than 6 in 10 Americans -- 63% -- say their sympathies in the Middle East situation lie more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians. Fifteen percent side more with the Palestinians, down slightly from recent years, while a combined 23% favor both sides, favor neither side, or have no opinion.

The 63% sympathizing with Israel today is statistically unchanged from the 58% to 59% seen from 2006 to 2009; however, it is considerably higher than most of the previous readings on this Gallup measure since 1993. The trend includes two 38% readings in 1996 and 1997.

Only in January 1991 -- shortly after Israel was hit by Iraqi Scud missiles during the Gulf War -- did U.S. support for Israel register as high as it does today.

Thanks to a biased, pro-Israeli media which shows only one side of the story.

Once you know the whole story, it's hard to support Israel's policies. Look, I believe Israel has a right to defend itself, but their reactions are a little disproportionate, aren't they? Like what they did in Gaza a couple years back. That was a disgrace. One Israeli dies they kill 100 Palestinians. A little unfair to me.

It might have something to do with Evangelical Christianity and Christian Zionism growing in the United States, which preaches that when the Jews control the Holy Land and rebuild the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, the Second Coming of Christ and Armageddon will happen.

I have never personally known any people who believe this. I think the idea that they are a major force is overstated.

Protestants generally are now barely a majority of the USA thanks to ongoing immigration. And even if you say, very generously, that one-fifth of all U.S. Protestants are these nutty Dispensationalists - they are not but a tenth of all Americans. This doesn't explain 38%-->63% in 14 years.

If you're going to talk about why, I'd suggest Jewish influence in the media and Hollywood and the halls of Congress, but that is a bit cliche, I admit. The Jews are a very smart people and are very political by nature. Most white-Americans are of farmer stock or similar, and beneath it all are simple people, nonpolitical. They're told "We must support Israel", so they do.

I still don't see what recent events (if any) would put upward pressure on this number in 2009 and 2010 here.

A lot of these Dispensationalists have a lot of influence in American politics. Your last president was one (and maybe the current president is, I'm not sure). These beliefs, and the religious right, have had an influence on American foreign policy for quite some time now.

But yeah. it also has to do with a pro-Israel bias in the media as well. This is why not all Zionists are Christians or Jews. I have met my share of Asatru Zionists, for example.

If Americans (and we Europeans for that matter) would think for a moment we would see that the entire show is run from Tel Aviv and we would cut off all support for Israel and let the entire Arab-Israeli charade continue the way it does.

We should let those two Semite desert dogma's battle it out and stay out of it.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

There are several justifications for Asatru Zionism:

    1. The reconstructionist standpoint: The Jews were able to reconstruct their society, even after great suffering, and became successful in their new nation where they maintain their traditions and beliefs.

    2. The folkish standpoint: Judaism is a fine example of a folkway and Israel should serve as a source of inspiration to us all.

    Yeah, it's weird.

I'm not really surprised that both support for Israel and pessimism over a lasting peace in the ME is at the levels it is in the USA.

I don't mean to be disrespectful to US citizens but they live in a media controlled bubble ( we in the UK are not far behind them now IMHO ) and are not renowned for being clued up about events in the wider world unless they are involved militarily in them. And even then the media coverage is wholly partisan , disregarding inconvenient truths etc

Since the end of the Cold War a new enemy had to take the place of the Big Red Bear (USSR).............enter " Islamic Extremism ". The US empire building system has always needed/relied upon the highly propagandist support of the mainstream media to gain some sort of legitimacy in its self designated role of " fighting evil " around the globe .....imo the Muslims have just replaced the Russians as the bogeymen to be feared.

So it is no surprise to see statistics like the ones you have posted John.We are headed for the abyss with the War On Terror and rational and sensible heads will be pushed to the outer limits in the debates about , not only its validity , but its conduct and the path it is leading us all down.

Orwells warnings have become the blueprint.............it's all extremely depressing and I struggle to see any light at the end of the tunnel.
Great is truth, but still greater, from a practical point of view, is silence about truth. .......Aldous Huxley
