    Frequency lists are definitely a good way to start learning the basics of vocabularies, specially regarding the open categories (mainly nouns, verbs and adjectives). I've used them in the past. They should be taken with caution, though, as some words may clearly vary depending on the sources of the list. For instance, words that textbooks wouldn't consider that basic or frequent such as government or state will be very high on the list if the sources are newspapers. But in general it's a nice tool, specially if you can compare several lists and contexts.

    It's also interesting to see how many of these words coincide in several languages. For example, the most common nouns in many of them are related to time and body parts.
