3,000 Scandinavians settled in Normandy in 911. In 1066 william invaded with an army of 8,000. No doubt the majority of these men had pre-norman frankish and gallo-roman blood. The ones that did have scandinavian blood where without doubt mixed with Frankish, Gallo, Flemish and Breton blood. The idea that vikings wiped everyone in Normandy upon their arrival is just silly.

Of course, many Americans don't have English blood in their veins, but most Normans didn't have French ancestry either - yet, they are still considered French.

I wonder how a few thousands men travelling without wives could have begot six generations down the line pure vikings, but that's just me.
