What I notice that differentiates African and European dancing (and I put Dominican and Puerto Rican into the African category since their ways of dancing is African influenced) is that the former is all about gyrating and sex. This clearly carries over into the behavior I see in the Puerto Ricans across the street when they dance to their reggaeton music.

Caesar and Cicero disapprove this foolhardy use of term Latin.

I avoid the term "Latin" because I do not want to be associated with Caribbean Hispanic culture.

I don't blame you. I don't like being associated with that culture either. Especially the Dominican.

There is absolutely nothing "Latin" about the culture. I see nothing Italian-like in Dominican and Puerto Rican culture. Go to a Dominican or Puerto Rican parade and all you see is girls twerking, guys grinding on them, and loud reggaeton music that is clearly African and not Spanish.

Then again, I have not been to the Dominican Republic, I am sure the culture is beautiful in its own right and is not like what I see here, but it's still African, not "Latin".

    Like I said, it's only a cultural/academic problem.
I am a textbook mongrel without a real identity, only having a Colombian passport to tie me to a specific land. I don't consider myself "Hispanic", seeing as I'm not from HIspania (Spain+Portugal). At most, I'll say I'm a Hispanophone.

Even moreso, I sincerely don't see any way how I could tie myself to the term "Latin". Granted, I have been in Latium and enjoyed the place, and my mild knowledge of Italian allowed to have friendly exchanges with people, but it doesn't make me one of them in the least.

I am neither Hispanic, Latin, Mediterranean, South European or anything of the like. I suppose other people from this side of the Atlantic, will try to tie themselves to any of these concepts, in an effort to fill the terrible identitarian void of being a New Worlder.
I understand that attitude, but don't condone it in the least. It's dishonest.
