    Of course it will lose its predominance. Although none of us here is going to see that.

    Given the state of things, it is quite obvious that American predominance is still going to be there for a long time. And its fading away is going to be gradual, only noticeable in the long run. Rather than the appearance of a new world superpower, it'll probably be a multipolar world, with several regional powers. During this period, it's also quite likely that a sort of 'world English' keeps being the interregional lingua franca. Then after a long while a new great power will eventually predominate again, and their language will become the important one, gaining spheres in a progressive way. Some will want to go on using English, in the same way old generations wanted to retain French, but the young generations will flock to the new cool language. It'll become global even faster because of the advances in technology and education, and the whole process of thinking that this language will now be the final global language for ever more will begin again.
