I think so, that the main reason is that the Slavs being Europeans belong to different civilizations. The communist bloc collapsed because communist ideology could not withstand the test of time. Fragmentation and cooptation. The natural way to both strenghten and protect Slavic identities are large States representing each of the subethnic groups. Right now, only East Slavs have a big country with a big military and economicla resources to hold its ground independently. South Slavs have been ruined by CIA/BND meddling which brought Yugoslavia to the ground, cutting all hope that Tito had created of a non-aligned development pole. Nowadays, the smaller States are weaker and subject to much more powerful foreign interference. West Slavs are the worst off in all of this. So... to resume: Big blocs representing each variety, striving for geopolitical autonomy, while remaining open to dialogue (Poland-Lithuania was after all in ok terms with the Russian Empire, right until the Prussians pitched the idea to partition it).

Jugoslavia's economy during Tito was based on cheap or free British French credits. It was not economically sustainable in the long term. It tried to eliminate the huge differences (economic societal and cultural like orthodox east and western christan western part of the country) without success.
