Honestly, Germanic tribes without Roman-Greek heritage could not leave any lasting legacy to Europe. Holy Roman Empire.

The Franks, especially the Salian Franks, were heavily Romanized.

True, but you can't compare it with the modern borders of Germany, which are much smaller. And the part of north Italy included was the Germanic Lombardia.

History of Italy as it is taught in Italian schools starts from the Greek colonization of southern Italy, the Italic, Latin and Etruscan culture of central Italy and the Celts of northern Italy. Believe or not we study all the three cultures. But before we are briefly introduced to Greek and Egyptian cultures to have an idea of what was happening before in the Mediterranean.

Italian history program is very long (5 years) and it so divided:
    - prehistory until the end of Greece
    - Rome
    - Middle Age
    - Renaissance and modern history
    - The unification of Italy, the two World Wars and the post war years.
