And now we are going back to Overijssel. To the part of the province known as Twente

And now I will take you to a quick trip back to Amsterdam:

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Right now we are in the Province of Guelders. In a part known as de Graafschap or the Achterhoek. It's in the same (Saxon) cultural zone as Twente and Drenthe (and we will end up in Zutphen along the river IJssel):

Right now we are going to stay in the borderland between Holland, Guelders and Brabant. We'll be starting off at Dordrecht:

In Het Hof the first free Statenvergadering (Council of the States) was held here between the 19th and 23th of July 1572 by the representatives of Holland and West-Friesland. This was the early start of the free and independent Netherlands- the Union of Utrecht would be signed on the 23th of January 1579 in Utrecht which would serve as the blueprint of the United Netherlands until 1795.

The ruins of the old Ter Merwe-castle:

    The town hall:

Some canals in the old city:

See how much water ? Dordrecht is essentially located on an island- the socalled Eiland van Dordrecht (the Isle of Dordrecht), that's because the city is surrounded by various rivers and and even a former sea inlet. How that came I will explain later.

Now we will be leaving Dordrecht and heading into the Biesbosch Natural Park:

In the Biesbosch you'd find a maze of marshes, streams, woods. For many years it was an area that even the Dutch could barely tame and in the Second World War it was a hub of the resistance as even the Germans did barely dare venturing there. And some that did.. never came out again.

A typical profession in that area was the job of the kooiker. He employed a duck decoy to trap ducks.

The Biesbosch (and the Eiland of Dordrecht) were born during a massive flood in 1421 (the St. Elisabethsflood) that wiped out the then existing polderland of the Groote or Hollandsche Waard. Not only did it create one of the biggest natural reserves in the country --- it also tore the then influential city of Dordrecht from it's hinterland and changed the course of Dutch history. Rotterdam (then slowly becoming a town), Amsterdam and Antwerp would profit immensely from Dordrecht's downfall.

The flood also killed thousands upon thousands of people and livestock and flooded many villages. The remains of which can still be found to this very day.
This flood is (until today) one of the biggest in our history.

Now on to the other side of the Hollandsch Diep (a massive inlet of over a kilometer wide) and into Brabant. To the small town of Heusden- a former frontier/fortified town guarding the borders in this once so heavily fought over land.

From the Biesbosch we will travel to Loevestein Castle.

During the days of the Republic.. some political opponents of the Stadtholder (the Stadtholder belonged to the House of Orange) and religious opponents of the Reformed Church were locked up here (earning those dissidents the nickname "Loevesteiners")- one of the most famous of them all was the writer and jurist Hugo Grotius (Dutch: Hugo de Groot). He escaped with the help of his wife and his maid he escaped using this book chest (out of which the books had been removed and he himself "stuffed in".

From there he safely escaped to France where he would serve the French and later on the Swedish court until his death in 1645.
