Slavonia Croats can understand Štokavski completely, specially younger Štokavski from areas of Bačka. It is basically same dialect, with a small difference due do constant flood from Bosnia to Slavonia during 17 and 18th century.
Let us leave modern men to their ‘truths’ and let us only be concerned about one thing: to keep standing amid a world of ruins.

What they speak is Torlakian dialect, intermediate between Serbian and Bulgarian.
