They're basically the same, but differ slightly in appearance.

I thought that the Ingush and Chechens never did that distinction themselves, they just called themselves as "Vainakh". That was until I read that they apparently did, like "Ghalghai" (Ingush) and "Nokhcho" (Chechens). I thought that this distinction was more or less artificial, and that it was made by the Russians. Before they just called themselves "Vainakh", which would mean "our people" something, I´m not sure. The Chechens (and Ingushes) here may of course know this better than me..

Another thing I read about, that generally Ingushes are "tall" while Chehcens are "short", and I´m sorry I couldn´t provide you with any sources or links on this because this was some time ago and I simply don´t remember. But this talk about they are "tall", they are "short" may just be (and probably is) a silly stereotype.

I have an Ingush friend he tolds me that Chechens and Ingush are the same.

Ingushetia broke away from Chechnya in the early 90s, despite that they are (nearly) the same people, Vainakh. Ingushetia´s relations with Russia is said to be better than Chechnya´s.

However, in the early 90s there broke out a conflict between Ingush and Ossetians. Ossetians apparently with Russian support.
