    Battle of Mohacs 1526

The Battle of Mohács was fought on 29 August 1526 near Mohács between the Ottoman empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. The Ottoman victory was a decisive event for the history Central Europe, for the following centuries. The forces of the Kingdom of Hungary led by King Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia were defeated by forces of the Ottoman Empire led by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

After the fall of Belgrade (Hungarian Nándorfehérvár) in 1521 to the Ottomans, the King of Hungary entered into marriage with Mary of Habsburg in 1522. The Ottomans saw that growing threat and the birth of a strong alliance against them. The Hungarian king later rejected two peace offers made by Suleyman. The King Louis II obviously considered war a better option than peace. Small scale skirmishes between the two countries never ended. Finally, seeing how Hungarians rejected peace offers, Suleyman decided to gather his army and advance up Danube river in June 1526.

    Location of Mohac

The Hungarian army camped near Mohacs, they chose the battlefield. It was a plain not far from Danube river.

Ottoman forces: Total number around 55.000. The regular army backed by the Janisseries and the Crimean Tatar forces. There were also few hundreds of soldiers from Levant and Egypt. The Ottoman army moved quickly alongside the Danube river and had around 160 cannons.
Hungarian forces: Total number between 35.000 to 40.000. The regular Hungarian army was strengthened by German, Spanish, Serbian and Czechian mercenaries. There were also roughly 5.000 Croatian forces, many hundreds of warriors from Papal states and Poland were also present. Hungarians had 85 cannons. However, around 15.000 to 20.000 Transylvanian and extra Croatian troops didnt arrive on time to Mohacs (the Ottomans moved so swiftly).

The battle started at noon. The Hungarian right flank attacked the Ottoman left flank (Rumelian/Balkan Turks and some others) when all the Ottoman forces didn't yet arrive to the battlefield. This Hungarian assault was succesful and pushed back the Ottoman left at the point of almost flanking the Ottoman center and endangering the life of the Sultan. However, when the Ottoman right flank (mostly Anatolian Turks from Asia minor) arrived and started to charge against the Hungarian left, the destiny of the battle changed. The Hungarian left was pushed back and was routed. The Ottoman army, using the artillery skilfully, started to make Hungarians flee from the battlefield after a few hours from the battle start. The Hungarians who didn't retreat died in combat, the Hungarian King fell from his horse and died during retreat.

Today it's May 29, anniversary of Constantinople's conquest. On this day in 1453, this great city was taken by Muslim Turks. A turning point in world history.
