    Default Old pictures from Saaremaa

In 1913 Estonian Natonial Museum in Tartu sent a photographer Johannes Pääsuke to photograph rural life and people of Saaremaa island, West-Estonia.

    What did he see there?

    And this is Johannes himself:

He was a famous person in Estonian photo and film history.

Thanks for posting. I've always been fascinated by Saaremaa, although believe it or not for one reason or the other I have yet to visit.

Yes, Saaremaa is a very interesting Island for many reasons. I will try to find the time to visit during summer, I know some dudes who go wind surfing there pretty much every year.

Now a question... Do these islanders look like Nordic Vikings or Russian peasants?

    In Russia...

Beards of that magnitude were not typical of Northern Europe. But in the East, slightly more. They even had to allow them to carry the beards in the army... a Europe-wide exception.
