Default Vitamins linked to Breast Cancer

A major study has revealed that women who take a daily multi-vitamin pill are nearly 20 per cent more likely to develop breast cancer.

The shock finding has rattled Australia's $2.5 billion complementary health industry, which is urging consumers not to panic, News Ltd says.

In a 10-year study of more than 35,000 women, researchers discovered those who regularly took a multi-vitamin pill increased the risk of developing a tumour by 19 per cent.

They said the result was concerning and needed investigation as many women use multi-vitamins in the belief they prevent chronic diseases such as cancer. A "biologically plausible" explanation is that taking vitamin and mineral supplements significantly increases the density of breast tissue, a strong risk factor for breast cancer. Folic acid, often present in a potent form in multi-vitamins, may also accelerate tumour growth.

The study, conducted by Sweden's Karolinska Institute and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, has been greeted with interest and caution by Australian experts. Women who took a multi-vitamin pill in the study had higher breast tissue density than those who took no vitamin supplements.

"Results from this prospective study suggest that the use of multi-vitamins may increase the risk of breast cancer," the lead author of the study, Susanna Larrson, said.

Media hype or truth? Of course, they can only say may. Interesting findings nonetheless.

Well.. I am actually hardly surprised. What one needs is a balanced diet rather then chemical "vitamins" and "nutrients". Of course they cause cancer.

I agree on this, and the findings don't really surprise me either. Finding a balanced diet is difficult also, given that foods are either a)Sprayed with herbicides and pesticides b) Genetically modified and c) Induced with growth hormones.

In Australia, shopping around for the more organic produce is time consuming and expensive. Another problem to consider is what people actually can and can't eat, due mainly to allergies. The reasons for taking multivitamins may be well-intentioned, but also misguided.

It is also known that a higher intake of vitamins is unhealthy, not only a deficit.

Only because if you create a nutrient enriched environment in your body, you are also going to be feeding any cancer that has potential to develop. Working to keep your self completely healthy as far as nutrients goes is a double edged sword. Yes your body may be more nourished but so will any cancer in your body allowing it to grow quicker.

Its helpful to have periods when you are nutrient deficient. It will in a sense kill of most newly developing cancer cells. Thats why I'm a huge supporter of only eating foods that are in season. Winter was and should be a sort of cancer treatment. Where we spend a few months unable to get any of those nutrients we would normally get in the summer months.

As my wife takes a prescribed supplement tablet, this caught my eye.

She's was screened a couple of years ago for breast cancer after a mammogram showed a suspicious mass. Fortunately the biopsy showed it to be fibrous cyst rather than a tumor.

As breasts are mostly fatty tissue, I'm wondering if this could be a result of a toxic build up of fat-soluble vitamins?

My aunt has terminal breast cancer and she both takes many vitamins and eats very healthy.

It might be the way food is mass produced, sprayed with chemical pesticides and the preservatives. The industrial factory farm food corporations like ConAgra are trying to shut up the doctors who advocate eating organic food. They are ostracised as rogue doctors.

I don't believe that. Usually multi tablets contain useless doses and they are taken mostly for placebo.

Unnatural chemicals use cause cancer, not vitamins. Prescription and non-prescription drugs cause cancer, not vitamins. What will they say next? Eating cause cancer?

Those multi-vitamins users are probably concerned with their health and are likely frequent prescription drugs users as well.

    Drug industry is fucking scam.
