According to some theories the moors heads in Sardinian flag were originally 3 and depicted really black africans,
the symbol comes from the coat of arms of the Pope Benedictus VIII, who played an important role in the fight against the moors who attempted to invade Sardinia.

Benedictus VIII ordered to the Maritime republic of Pisa to send its fleet in support of the 4 sardinian christian and independent states called Giudicati, against the moors ruled by Mujahid al Amiri, in the 1015-16.
