My English friend is an immigrant in Iceland, the company she works at requires quite specific skills so they actively recruit foreigners. She was told there was no one in Iceland who had the skills and experience she had and they needed. Maybe a quarter of the staff are foreign, mainly European.

She lives in central Reykjavik and it's quite noticeable that there are few non-whites. Everyone in the city automatically speaks English to you as soon as they realise you're not Icelandic. I pass enough in Iceland for them to speak Icelandic to me at first and this happened when I went into a cafe once. After I sat down a black woman came in, and they automatically spoke English to her. She just looked at them, and then replied in Icelandic. Quite awkward.

You know what? Many Americans don't know this difference. They think the rest of the world is just like the US or Canada. A black born in Canada is Afro-Canadian, because there is no Canadian ethnicity. So they think he could have been English or German, had he been born in those countries.
