they look quite different. British people slightly lighter with smaller facial features.

You can notice a difference when you're very familiar with a population. To me the French often look quite different to us, and I agree, it has been quite noticeable seeing people interviewed on the news lately.

Can remember when our Rangers Football Club, had a breton football Manager. And even he stood out imo.

Hmm My grandmother had dark brown hair and brown eyes and her French ancestry came partially from Brittany. Her mother's surname was St. Denis. A surname from there I believe.
But not all French are 'dark' I would say. Just like not all Germans look Nordic. I have seen some dark Irish and British types just from watching movies or seeing pictures here.
