This is an interesting debate, and it can go either way. On the one hand, the British are (arguably) somewhat more liberal about race, immigration, gender roles and possibly even nowadays sexuality than are the French. (The debates regarding gay marriage were much more polarised and vitriolic in France than in the UK). On the other hand, the French have a strictly-enforced 35-hour working week, a bigger welfare state, a lot more wholly or partly State-owned companies and industries, more active trade unions, and stricter laws regarding hiring and firing workers. In short, this ultimately comes down to whether you consider social issues or economic issues to be more important.
