    It looks likes Orthodox churches in eastern Slavic countries and some neighbouring countries do not use benches during services. Orthodox Churches in other countries have them. Something I cannot understand given that elderly people 70+ years of age who often attend the churches have to stand up for 2-3 hours.

    Sophia Cathedral built in the centre of Kiev in 1037. The exterior of the cathedral was rebuilt, many pieces of the interior design have been preserved.

    Maybe it is because elderly people are full of aches and pains. They might never get up again if they sit down.

    Standing up during service is a tradition. Orthodox church in eastern Slavia is conservative. The government changed from Julian to Gregorian calendar a long time ago, while church is still using the Julian calendar. Christmas is still celebrated on 7th of January.
