Should Labour camps replace Prisons?

I personally think that forced labour camps should replace prisons, in forced labour camps, the inmates are forced to do gruelling physical labour in harvesting resources (usually from a mine), so there is some financial output from the whole ordeal. In prisons however, prisoners sit on their fat lazy asses and do nothing but use up tax money and be babysitted by guards.

They might as well do something useful like picking up litter or planting trees. But I would reserve prison for violent offenders only.

What are prisons for anyway? Rehabilitation? It does not work, criminals will get back to business the moment they set foot outside.
Seems like a much better idea to have them pay their debt to society through forced, unpaid labor. If they are too dangerous then simply execute them.

I like the idea, but I think prisons here in North America already do that.

Prisons like the ones in Scandinavia should be debitched. No discipline, only luxury for criminals.

I know of people who would rather go to prison than do work for a company. Preference would be Community service whenever possible, for prisoners that are deemed 'safe in community'.

Prisoners are treated better than people in total care retirement homes. :-/

I think they should be definitely doing something to pay back taxpayer money.
