Q. Is it ok to perv over Dawn in the musical Buffy episode?

A. Yes. Michelle Trachtenburg, who plays Dawn Summers, was born on October 11, 1985, so her 16th birthday was October 11, 2001. The musical episode of Buffy - properly called Once More, with Feeling - was first aired on November 6, 2001, meaning she was certainly over 16 when it was broadcast. (And no, I don't know when it was filmed exactly, but I do know that Buffy episodes tended to be pretty close to the air date.)

However, if you live in a country in which the legal age of consent is over 16 then you're a paedophile if you perv over Dawn in that particular episode.

In most countries of members who frequent this board it would not be considered to be OK from a legal or moral viewpoint. You know this. Therefore why pose this rhetorical question?

Wouldn't it? What countries have something higher than 16 as their age of consent? In the UK, as I'm sure you know, one can be married at 16.

Let me try to approach this with the seriousness this topic deserves. First of all, is it wrong to "perv" over underage girls? If you say yes, then you definitely should not perv over her in that episode, since there is no way of ascertaining whether or not she was 16 at the time of filming, which is what really matters, not the date it was actually aired.

Also, why not get our terminology straight at last: pedophilia means sexual attraction to children. Perving over 16-18 year old girls might indicate something else, namely ephebophilia.

And it's not an entirely clear-cut case whether just perving over anyone or anything is wrong.

I was making the point that in some countries one could have sex with her and marry her at 16 (or, say, 12 in Spain, by the look of it), but in California, for example, where it was filmed, you'd be locked up as a paedophile. What if me and my hypothetical 16-year-old wife went on holiday to California?

I don't think it's ok to perv over underage girls, though I wouldn't criminalise those who did (as long as the girl was not affected in any way). However, 16 is not underage, and those who fancy 16-year-olds are not ephebophiles.
