Today's 21st of February, although it may not be much of a significant day for you, Bengalis in East Bengal (current Bangladesh) then part of Pakistan, on this day in 1952 gave their lives in order to keep their language, script and heritage lightened up as innocent university students amongst thousands of commoners marched for the right to their mother language, Bengali and reverse the "Urdu-only" policy and many gave their lives in the process as they were shot upon by the Pakistani police.
The day is commemorated with great celebrities in Bangladesh where men and women, young and old, pray their tributes to the dead martyrs or Shaheed in the Shahid Minar (Martyr's column)
The day was later designated by the UNESCO in 1999 as a day where the linguistic diversity of the world is respected and honoured.
Peace.
