Street vendors are detained by police at a popular open-air market in Warsaw after throwing stones and metal objects at custom authorities in reaction to the killing of one of their colleagues. A 36 year old Nigerian was fataly shot after trying to flee from a routine police inspection.


A Nigerian was shot dead in Warsaw on Sunday after a struggle with police who chased him through a crowded open-air market whose traders pelted officers with bricks, police said after making 32 arrests.

The 36-year-old man took flight when a police patrol entered the market in the central Praga district, police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski told AFP.

Traders threw bricks and other objects at police when they began to pursue him, Sokolowski said.

“According to certain witnesses, the man tried to wrestle a gun away from a policeman,” when it went off, he said.

“A police officer was wounded and hospitalised. Thirty-two people were detained, most likely all Nigerians, but we are still checking their identities,” Sokolowski said.

Investigators have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the man’s death.

Like in France for instance? To be honest we're not living in "wild East" and people shooting to death by police it's rather rarity...But fortunatelly also not in "Wild West" where alien hordes could start demolition of the city after such accident.

If this had happened in France, the UK, Sweden etc. the rioting would last for days in all the major cities.

Mostly in Warsaw. However, this was a marketplace rich in all sorts of immigrants. In fact, the only single larger group of immigrants in Poland are the Vietnamese (many came during the war).

Most correct. They are well-behaved people who usually stick to themselves and have their own niche on the market. They form quite a close-knit community. Their specialty being cheap Asian food bars and selling all sorts of Chinese stuff.
