Unhappy Native American outfit sells for €320k in Kilkenny

A native American outfit complete with feathered headdress sold for €320,000 at hammer at Fonsie Mealy’s auction in Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, yesterday.

The late 19th century outfit — comprising hide poncho war shirt, matching leggings, headdress, and purse — had been estimated at €4,000-€6,000.

The poncho has original, hand-painted designs, front and back quilted rosettes, quilled strips on the sleeves and red cloth neck trimming.

It was part of the estate of the late Jane Avril de Montmorency Wright, of Burnchurch House and Castle Morres, Co Kilkenny. It is suggested by tradition that the outfit came to Castle Morres through the family of the Hon Reymond Hervey de Montmorency (1835-1902).

He was a major general in the British Army who fought in the Indian Mutiny, commanded in the Sudan in 1886-87 and eventually succeeded his father to a Viscountcy in the Irish Peerage. In 1866 he married Rachel Mary Lumley Godolphin Michel, daughter of Field Marshall Sir John Michel at Montreal in Canada.

A half-length portrait of Rev John Kearney, former Provost of TCD and a member of President Barack Obama’s Irish family, was bid up to €1,400 at which point it was withdrawn. But an unusual Chinese hardwood table spice carriage on wheels, measuring just 12 inches by 12 inches, sold for €41,000. It had been estimated at €700-€1,000.
