Solvang; Danish town

Today while driving to San Francisco, I stopped off a town called Solvang. Solvang means "sunny field" and was founded in 1911 by some danish educators, and was built on 9000 acres of spanish land grants.

danish educators immediately went to work building a danish folk school. In 1914 the school moved to newly constructed Atterdag College, where students learned the basics and a love of Danish culture. Atterdag College is gone, but it's spirit still infuses the town.

Solvang is all about Danish Heritage, and preservation.

I thought I'd share this Danish town in California with you guys...

When I was a kid we would occasionally drive up to Solvang from Morro Bay or Pismo beach so that my mom could buy some trinkets in their gift shops.
We usually toured the Hearst castle on these trips to Solvang.

I remember the shops that is about it.

Yeah, I've heard about it several times. Many backpackers from Denmark are visiting the town for the novelty of it. Everybody agrees that it's not authentic at all and there are errors about many many of the things.
They say it resembles a sugarcoated fairytale of a country that never existed and put Danish flags in it. It's a Disneyland.

But people also says the tackiness and novelty of it makes it worth a couple of hours.

(I heard they sold smörgasbord. LOL Swedish food in a 'Danish' town.)

"Solvang" means "Insult" in Estonian

lol that's very different.

Sol means sun in Danish and vang is like an outlined area or field. Solvang is somewhat equal to Sunny field. It's a rather beautiful name. =>

Colloquially/informal Denmark is often called Dannevang by us natives. Beeeaaauuuutiful.

Colloquially/informal Denmark is often called Dannevang by us natives. Beeeaaauuuutiful.

"Vang" means "prisoner" in Estonian. I speak a funny language, I know

Yup. It's in our end something is wrong!

(even trough Danish doesn't make sense. We don't pronounce the words as they are written. And we have more grammatical exceptions than there are flies in a pigsty.)

A friend of mine who has lived in Sweden, once told me that Danes speak like they have a potato in their mouth and it's very hard to understand them.
