so the Iranian population got replaced? the languages were usually, funnily, imposed by small groups that eventually got very diluted in the local populations so there's no need that inhabitants of today's Iran look different from the inhabitants of ancient Iran and it's not necessary that they look like the true linguistically Iranic peoples that brought the language from the steppes

look at the Anatolians: they look the same under every different language and "nationality" that imposed itself over the region. the people look the same and the same genes flow there and only the language and ethnic identity changes, like in many places around the world. so Turks are only in part Turkic and the same, Iranians are probably only in a small part original steppe Iranic

Persians were probably like the second guy, but with dark hair and mostly dark eyes and more eastern pulled. Sort of like brahmins but whiter.

Persians soon ran a giant multicult empire so they no doubt quickly darkened up, though.

King Solomon's pic pretty much nailed it. Sarmatians were probably a little more western but similar.

And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

Your thread has no specific answer, because:

    1. Persian empire was huge, not all of them were Iranic, but many of them assimilated into Iranic/Persian or absorbed Iranic cultural elements.

    2. Persians and Medes was very close to Mesopotamians. The best example is Elamites. Persians borrowed some elements from Elamites and other Mesopotamians. The mixing and marriage between those two group is not doubtful.

    3. Greeks and Persians called many nomads as Scythian. Were all of those tribes unmixed? Can you prove that all Scythians were similar to each other?

    4. Iranic = Iranian-speaking =/= specific Anthropology, or marker/haplogroup

    5. Even if you consider R1a as original Aryan (Indo-Iranian) marker, it's more popular in countries like Afghanistan and Tajikistan than Iran. J2 and G is popular in Iran, J2 is Greco-Anatolian/Mesopotamian and G is from Caucasus. So the Iranicization/Aryanization is more possible than a huge migration by Indo-Europeans.

    6. Some Iranians have R1b. What's their origin?

    7. Because someone speaks Persian today, it doesn't mean he/she is a directs descendant of noble and royal families like Achaemenid and Sassanid. Today, Persian and other Iranic groups are diverse. From typical West Asian/Caucasian-look to Semite, Mongoloid (Hazara and some Tajiks), and even African (Afro-Iranians). Just like Arabic and Turkic groups.
