Record Number of Foreign Roma Arrive in Helsinki
An unauthorised camp set up by itinerant Roma.
The number of foreign Roma arriving in Helsinki this summer has far exceeded that of previous summers. Police believe that many of the Roma have committed crimes. They have also set up what amounts to illegal camps.
Police estimate that at least 200 foreign Roma, mainly citizens of Romania, are living in the city now. This is twice the amount as last year.
The travellers have set up unlawful camps on city property, bringing litter to the area, and are believed to have committed a number of crimes.
Juha Laaksonen of the Helsinki police says that a number of thefts have been attributed to the Roma.
“The thefts mainly involve shoplifting and pickpocketing. They have also committed more serious robberies,” Laksonen says.
There have also been complaints about the Roma camps, which have spread litter in their surroundings. City dwellers have also been wary about moving near the camps.
