Riga streets ‘disinfected’ after Waffen SS march

Anti-fascism protesters cleaned the area around the Freedom Monument in Riga on Monday, after supporters and former members of the Latvian Legion of the Nazi Waffen SS marched earlier in the day to honor those who lost their lives fighting on the German side during World War II.

Protesters held placards depicting war crimes carried out by the Nazis. The march was organized to celebrate Legionnaires Day, which pays tribute to veterans who fought alongside German troops during World War II.

Some of you guys don't understand. For you there were only two sides in the WWll, Nazis and the alliance. But for some countries it was more tragic.

Some countries were attacked by 2 enemies. USSR invaded our country first, and then Germans invaded. UK, USA and other allies turned their backs on Eastern Europe. What were we left to do when two enemies attack, and you are betrayed by the rest of the world... You pick the side in hopes that one enemy will destroy the other.

As I said, Latvians did not support Nazis, in fact Germans were really hated at the time, all the centuries of slavery Latvians had to endure under German landlord rule were still in a recent memory.
