I will admit to having never seen any of the films that she supposedly 'starred' in, but opening every middle-brow publication in Britain to be faced with this:

has convinced me that La Jolie is something I can live quite happily without.

She is just another plain woman with Hollywood make-up techniques.

For all I care - as a non-historian, althought I am able to understand Osweo's concern - ancient Egyptians could have been Bushman, with Whoopi Goldberg playing Cleopatra now.
    Be creative, invent a perversion.

Mutation rates are far from agreed upon. The phylogenetic trees are well established but the dating is not. Stay tuned on R1b (and all others, of course).

My money is on the Gravettians bringing R1b into Europe.

That's the sort of thing I'm thinking too. I was just too tired last night to bother putting it in writing.

Iberia's post (was he citing somebody?) had some good points, but still doesn't convince me. It's a scenario worth looking at, and may have applied in some regions at least, but I'm still not buying the idea of complete and utter smothering of ancient Y-lineages almost EVERYWHERE in Western Europe! I'd point out the Basques, for instance, who as I understand are almost completely R1b. Additionally, and this is something I know a little more about, the scenario of complete elite replacement with incoming men doesn't really work with what is known of early Irish political organisation.... The Gaelic elite allowed subjected peoples to retain their own kings, but held them as vassals by means of hostage taking and various tributes, rights and obligations. Many of their vassal kings had vassal kings of their own. In some parts, there were as many as six or more 'layers' of sovereignty, apparently having much in common with invasion-chronology. I'm not buying into the idea that not ONE of these lowly sub-sub-sub-Kingdoms didn't retain a male line from pre-Celtic days.

Additionally, I'd look to the east for parallels; why didn't the other Indo-European speakers, the aR1ans, enjoy the same mathematical advantage against even sparser Finnic populations?

I'd ask, if the native western men weren't R1b, what were they? One of the E3-whatever things? I?
