Truman State's Agave americana plant nears end of 50-year life

Truman's agave plant is entering its flowering stage and within a few months it will die, ending its estimated 50-year life.

It looks like something that belongs on the set of “Jurassic Park.”

Instead, it’s sitting in the Truman State greenhouse in Kirksville and ready to put on the blockbuster show of its life.

Truman’s agave plant, or Agave americana, is entering its flowering stage, sending a stalk shooting from its base and through the greenhouse’s roof. Literally. They actually had to get Truman maintenance personnel to remove panels from the ceiling before the plant had a chance to smash through.
