Gypsies are Australoid-admixed, Middle Easterners (especially in the Southern part of the Arabian peninsula and in the Maghreb) are Negroid-admixed, latter ones have more distinctive features like broad lips, frizzy hair and flared noses, while gypsies and other Indians are often just darker in pigmentation

I don't think they had much to do with proper Egypt.Obviously they picked up some Mid Eastern influence on the way here...

Since they declared they had come from Little-Egypt, they were called ‘Egyptiens’ by the French, and ‘Egypteners’ or ‘Heydens’ in the Netherlands. The contemporary terms ‘Gypsy’, ‘Gitano’, ‘Gitane’ or some equivalent names in Greece and the Balkans derive from those ‘Egyptians’ as well. However, Little-Egypt was a Venetian administered region in the Peloponnese, where the Gypsies had settled before being pushed onwards by the Turkish wars.

Most admixture breakdowns show about 10-25% SSA at least in the Maghreb and southern Arabian peninsula (less so in the Levant), like K8, K12b, K13:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...XwUsAA/pubhtml
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...hl=en_US#gid=0 (add East African and Sub Saharan)
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=804264822 (here you have less SSA proper but some additional is already hidden in NE African and Red Sea)

Also check http://www.eupedia.com/europe/europe...requency.shtml for haplogroup L

Are gypsies Dravidian? I thought they mostly originated in northern India.
(MacDonald) A custom fit resolves the differences above and says:

    Irish 0.2294 Tuscan 0.7706 or
    English 0.4437 Sicily 0.5563 or
    English 0.2799 Tuscan 0.7201 or
    Irish 0.3716 Sicily 0.6284

India can't be clearly divided that way, (partial) Veddoid looks can be found up to Pakistan
