George Orwell - Down & Out in London & Paris (another book studied by sociology students amongst the many sociology books students must read; although Thatcher banned Open University courses in Sociology since this is the highest social science which originated in France, and sociology explains why religion and the media and advertising brainwashes society and people, (I've noticed every sociology student and sociology teacher I've met are Atheists, and they're quick to explain to people about religion being used by the government to brainwash the masses,) and how advertising in shops and on television brainwashes people, the influence of music and television soaps on people and society, the different political and economic structures of different societies, the different subcultures of people within societies and their mentalities, the psychology of humans, anthropology, etc, are all amongst the subjects and topics studied on by sociology students.)

George Orwell's observations of the mentality, delusions of grandeur, dreams, hopes, aspirations and living circumstances of the extremely poor, sick, mentally ill, destitute, dispossessed and rejected people from society in London and Paris are covered in this book.

US writer John Steinbeck - The Grapes of Wrath (about the Great Depression in the US during the 1930's and how the value of money changed when Wall Street collapsed and its impact on millions of US people, the rich becoming poor overnight, a loss of the middle-classes, and signs on posts amongst the poor asking for communism during the time when they were suffering from the effects of capitalism. People would take large piles of banknotes to buy a loaf of bread when the value of US money became nearly worthless during The Great Depression.)

I would say to start with a book of short stories. Some say it's like a type of meditation. I would recommend Murakami's After the Quake, if you have not read it yet.

You mean the Spanish Civil War. There was not a "Catalonian war against Franco".

A very good French novel would be Les Noces Barbares (English title: The Wedding) by Yann Queffelec. Totally different genre and probably one of the saddest books you will ever read.

Otherwise, a French classic Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons) might be a bit tough to read but it has to be my favorite! There were many movie adaptations based on the book (such as Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close, Uma Thurman and John Malkovich or Cruel Intentions with Sarah Michelle Gellar (the love of my life portraying Merteuil, the Literary love of my life) Ryan Philippe and Reese Witherspoon)
