I agree with Sweet Lullaby on 1984. Great book.

I really liked The Catcher in the Rye, by JD Salinger. Then, A Study in Scarlet, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; and The Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon.

You're interested in the paranormal, so I think that you would enjoy any book by Brad Steiger. He's an elderly man who's been interested in and involved with the subject for decades. His book on beings, associated with the UFO phenomenon, is an especially fun read. He also wrote collections of stories about ghosts and monsters. You have to suspend disbelief when you read some of the claims and tales. It's enjoyable light reading, though.

Did you mean "The X-Files"? That was one of my favorite horror/science fiction TV shows. It was perfect for the '90s.

    Surprise nobody said "mein kampf".

I would recomend you "the long walk" from stefen king. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Walk
It's not a too long book and when you start to read, you can't stop.
