As a descendant of men who stood by Daniel Shays, I know that it is arms in the hands of everyday people that serve as a check on both governments and criminals.
To critics of the decision...if you actually read the newspapers of the time, the "Wild West," wasn't.
Many settlers of the time were combat veterans of the US Civil War and were as well as, if not better, equipped and experienced than the bad guys.
...and for me, the key is proper training: not just mechanics, but ethics.
My dad 1st put a rifle in my hands at the age of 5, after a year of slowly bringing me to an understanding of right and wrong. His tutelage is a large part of the reason why I am hunting/firearms safety instructor and certified range safety officer.
