Iraqi military vehicles are purportedly filmed fleeing Ramadi after the city fell to Islamic State jihadists

Iraqi government forces have been seen retreating from Ramadi following the city's capture by Islamic State.

Dozens of mlitary vehicles fled the city, the capital of Iraq's largest province of Anbar, after Isil swept into the city on Friday and seized control of the area on Sunday.

The loss of Ramadi marks one of Iraq's worst setbacks since the goernment began a nationwide offensive to reclaim territory lost to Isil in June 2014.

An estimated 500 people have been killed in the city, in the west of the country, in recent days and thousands more residents have been displaced.

“There's no one here to defend us - our army has melted away” one local resident told The Telegraph.
