America needs to adopt a system similar to the direct democracy that Switzerland has. However, the founding fathers built the electoral system the way it is today so who are we to question them?

I actually think we need to embrace our federalist system. Get involved with our state and local governments and shape the federal government that way. That's what the Founding Fathers intended. If we can restrain the federal government before we crash (and we will if we don't), federalism is the best system.

Very good question, and I won't claim to have the answer. But I think we need to re-educate the American populace. Whether that necessitates a return to orthodox Christianity or merely a reawakening to the values of freedom, self-governance, and small government, is up for debate. If Americans are willing to take responsibility for their own lives rather than leaving their fate to their rulers, though, then we have a chance. I just see so many people who are duped into thinking that government is a good thing and that we're actually free (the subject of this thread). Our founders would scoff at the idea that this is freedom. If we can show our fellow citizens that there is more happiness, more opportunity, and more safety to be had by shrinking government, then maybe we can turn this ship around.
