A new summer record temperature of 33.7 degrees Celsius was recorded at Puumala in southern Savo on Monday. At Evo in the municipality of Lammi near Hämeenlinna on Monday, the mercury reached 33.2 degrees. The heat wave will continue at least this week.
Many places in Southern Finland have been scorched by temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. Temperatures over 25 degrees have been recorded as far north as Oulu.
This summer’s previous record temperature was measured last Thursday when the thermometer hit 32.8 degrees in Puumala.
Finland’s all time highest temperature dates back to 1914 when 35.9 degrees was recorded in Turku. Temperatures recorded on Monday were the highest measured in 50 years.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute forecasts the current heat wave will continue at least this week and probably beyond.
