Trilingual in Mandarin and Shanghainese. There are concepts I explain well in English and not so well in the others. Same for the other two languages.

I'm one of the few people who can actually read and write in Shanghainese. But my family members don't know about this even though they know how certain words are proununced. I just took it a step further and did research and looked at others' research. Believe it or not there is an input method for it which is surprisingly simple and easy. Sorry there is unfortunately no viable input method for Linux or Mac.

I'd like to learn the dialect my maternal grandfather spoke which is how Shanghainese used to sound like. It's still spoken in some parts of western Shanghai and some neighboring parts of Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

How many distinct Chinese dialects are there altogether?

How distinct is Shanghainese as you speak it, though, from regular Mandarin? I hear contemporary Shanghainese is not so different.
