I'd like to learn the dialect my maternal grandfather spoke which is how Shanghainese used to sound like. It's still spoken in some parts of western Shanghai and some neighboring parts of Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

How distinct is Shanghainese as you speak it, though, from regular Mandarin? I hear contemporary Shanghainese is not so different.
