Default How does Pomeranian sounds to you?

Pomeranian or Pommeranisch is a dialect of Low Saxon spoken by the Pomeranians and their descendants here in Brazil, specially in Espírito Santo. The language is almost extinct in Pomerania but is still alive and common in Southern Brazil.

Sounds more Scandinavian than German to me.

My grandfather (half Venetian and Half Calabrese) is from a place near where some Pomeranians live. Very simple and nice people.

    Great thread.

It's interesting how Germans and people of German-descent consider Italians and their descendants like their relatives here in Brazil, something that is not observed in Europe or any other place. There's a German guy in my city that lived his entire life in a small city inhabited only by people of North Italian and German descent who insists that North Italians are closer to Germans than to Southern Italians.

    hahahah

I think it happens because we share the same experiences as recent immigrants here. Many years living side by side in the same communities or close enough to generate bonds between the two communities.

The German immigrants and the Oriundi definitely share many bonds. I think one of the most important things now is how to preserve our identities here at the same time integrating to mainstream Brazilian society. It's becoming more and more difficult now, because we also have to face the enemy called Americanization at the same time.

Low German (more similar to Dutch than to Standard German) with Slavic influence.

Some of my ancestors are from the borderland between Pomerania and West Prussia, Meller and von Glissen (Gliszczynski) families (I think Mellers are from Chojnice and Gliszczynski are from Glisno - von Glissen, as the Germanized form of their surname indicates):

Here is a list of Pomeranian nobility and you have Gliszczyński (von Glissen):

My maternal grandmother is Gliszczyńska, descended from that family.
