The internet, since it's usenet days, has recently become incredibly viable for things like this, advertising, shilling, etc. It's not a question of "if" it's Russian or American, it's really just more of "WHO" is shilling "WHAT" today, or where?

Jewish interests, American interests, Russian interests, there are shills for all of them and they all have a constant presence on most sites, here, or 4chan, krautchan, and many many others. The USA prefers to use tactics like honeypots in order to get peoples information and get them on watchlists. One popular one was a fake "anonymous" website encouraging people to 'join' anonymous and get them to voluntarily give up their personal information, including their political beliefs. You really have to be vigilant about where you sign up and what information you voluntarily post across the internet, even if you delete it, it's not hard for people to find archived or cached posts you've made, including multiple websites that aggregate information you've posted on multiple different websites. If you ever wondered why there are hundreds of accounts with only a couple of posts who purport to be from a specific place, who only post degrading or derogatory information about X or Y european group, those are the things I'm talking about. It ranges from political shilling, to simply subversive advertising, like companies who pay people who make accounts and make positive reviews for their products and negative reviews about others. You never know if some story about some product you are reading by people who claim "It's bad, I injured myself, blah blah my baby hurt himself touching it" is by an authentic person or someone trying to advertise something.

My favorite story is about the /mlp/ poster on 4chan who requested some info under the FOI act and got a massive folder, from things as random as memes he posted on /pol/ to long, rambling fanfictions he wrote about wanting to fuck ponies. Make no mistake, whatever website you are posting on, you never know who is watching, and you never know if you're posting with regular other people or a couple of shills who are trying to advance America, Russian, Jewish, Corporate, or whatever interests.
