It actually hasn't. But when we get rid of the current totalitarian government I think the chances of joining will greatly increase. Even if not I believe Turkey should keep facing towards the West and at least maintain its official candidate status which allows Turkish students to participate in Erasmus exchange programme and such. Erasmus is one of the biggest projects in Europe, imo.

Still, if Turkey joins EU, Greece and Bulgaria and the rest of Balkans will have another country that shares a lot in common with them, as opposed to the Western Europe which they're less affiliated with.

Sorry, but I don't think Bulgaria or Greece are more closer to Turkey than to Western Europe. The influence in Bulgaria has been German and/or Russian (depending on the period) since the liberation. For a longer period: German. Of course we have a lot of common and shared things with Turkey, but I still think the religion (the traditional one even if not practiced) plays a very important part for the core ideas in a society. Thus through Christianity, the values with Western Europe are shared. And now with the rise of islamization in Turkey, Bulgaria and Turkey become much more non similar...

Turkey belongs to the most significant international associations, it is a big country with a huge amount of inhabitants, many turkish immigrants live and work in many european countries since long time ago...

I believe Turkey has already completed its tasks to become a full member of the EU, perhaps before than other countries that they are already and unbelievably inside.
