Austria violates human rights standards in care of refugees: Amnesty International

The wealthy country is being overwhelmed by the influx of refugees and delivering woefully inadequate care for them, the human rights organization concludes.

Amnesty International says homelessness, unhygienic conditions and shoddy medical care await war refugees in one of Europe’s richest countries: Austria.

Austria is suffering a “systemic breakdown” that is “violating the human-rights standards” of refugees from the Middle East, Amnesty said in its report Friday, following a visit to the country’s main processing centre in Traiskirchen, about 30 km. south of Vienna.

Austria’s Interior Ministry said the country is in a “precarious situation” and having a hard time handling the flow of Middle East refugees.
